Bespoke refurbishment and
Challenge
UK Paper Hub not only leads the industry in product care due to careful handling and a full range of onsite refurbishment services, but also because our committed and agile team take an openminded and progressive approach to everything they do. We are always looking for new and better ways of working. And when challenges arise, such as those below, we collaborate closely with customers and partners to develop innovative solutions that ensure UK Paper Hub product handling and refurbishment services continue to meet their unique needs.
Finding a new refurbishment process for our fine paper customer
Our customer’s customer – a sheet plant for fine paper – cuts bespoke sized sheets from large and heavy reels. The industry standard method of refurbishment is not best suited for these particular reels due to their weight and also the specific type of paper. The combination of weight and glossy paper increased the risk of slippage when being handled.
We visited the customer’s site to review their processes and handling equipment up close. Backed by our Product Care Team’s extensive experience, we worked with them to create a bespoke refurbishment service suitable, specifically, for their products and operations. Collaboration with the sheet plant team was key throughout this project.
The new refurbishment process that was developed eliminated the risk of slippage when handling the reels. This has not only helped prevent damage to the customer’s products but has made handling safer for the teams involved.
A reflection of our commitment to customer-led solutions
A large newspaper printer that UK Paper Hub distributes to, utilises an automated warehousing facility at their site. They were experiencing issues with accepting our refurbished reels as their system would crash as the reels passed their automated scanner.
We worked closely with our customer to investigate the root cause of the crashing, and how it was related to our own refurbishment process. This included a thorough site visit by our Product Care Team. Following a systematic approach, together we discovered that it was the specific type of refurbishment materials used in the rewrapping process that was causing the system to react abnormally. We specially sourced new resources, unique to the customer’s needs, resolving the issue going forward.
Refurbished products from UK Paper Hub are now fully integrated with the customer’s automated warehousing system, causing no system failures since implementation. This saved valuable time for the customer by no longer having operations stop suddenly and not being left short of stock by having to reject reels – which also naturally resulted in fewer claims for our customer.
